How to Choose a Fire Pit

A fire pit is a great way to add an extra dimension to your back yard or deck. Extend the use of your outdoor space well into Fall and Winter! Here are a few things to consider before buying a fire pit:

  1. Permanent vs. Portable
Are you designing your backyard / deck area around the fire pit? Or are you looking to get a fire pit that can be put in a number of locations depending upon the occasion? Of course, if you're looking to use natural gas as a fuel, you'll almost certainly want something in a permanent location. Wood burning fire pits are typically the most flexible.
  2. Wood or Gas
Looking for that natural crackling sound and authentic campfire smell? Or do you prefer the simplicity of an instant fire powered by gas?
  3. What's Your Budget?
From around $100 to well over $10,000, it all depends on how substantial the fire pit is, and what your intended usage is. As a rule of thumb, wood burning is less expensive than gas, and metal is less expensive than stone.
  4. What's Your Style?
From rustic, metal fire rings to ultramodern chimeneas, there's probably a fire pit that matches your desired aesthetic.

Fire Pit Safety

While fire pits are a great addition to your home, any time there's fire involved an extra level of precaution is warranted. Here are a few tips to stay safe.

  • Keep your fire pit at least 10 feet away from structures or anything combustable.
  • Avoid windy weather. You don't want any embers blowing around.
  • Don't start your fire with gasoline or other dangerous substances.
  • Keep a douser nearby to extinguish the fire when necessary.
  • Never leave a fire unattended. Always extinguish thoroughly.
